After 1917, when the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant was made an appointment, and the appointment of Regimental or Brigade Sergeant-Major made exclusive to the rank of Warrant Officer, the four-bar chevron was used by Acting Staff Sergeants-Major, Sergeants Bugler and Sergeants Trumpeter.
