Throughout the First World War, when moving into the line prior to battle soldiers were instructed to discard the pack, this then being held at base. When worn without the pack, generally the haversack was moved to the back, and the entrenching tool cover moved to the left hand side beneath the frog and helve carrier, as shown in the image above. When worn in this fashion the web equipment was called battle order.

When worn without the pack, generally the haversack was moved to the back, and the entrenching tool cover moved to the rear, between the frog and helve carrier, and the water bottle, as shown in the image above. When worn in this fashion the web equipment was called battle order.

This set includes the following items: waist belt, braces, ammunition pockets, water bottle carrier, entrenching tool cover, entrenching tool helve, frog, and haversack. The water bottle is not included.
