M16 Stahlhelm

Click for large image. In response to the French adoption of the Adrian helmet and the obvious ineffectiveness of the Pickelhaube, in August 1915 the German High Command called for designs for a new helmet. Designed primarily by two men, Frederich Schwerd and Dr. August Bier, the designs for the Model 1916 were drawn up in September 1915. By December of that year, the M1916 was being trialled by a Sturm (Assault) battalion. Following minor changes recommended by this trial production of the "Stahlhelm" began in January 1916 and by spring of this year the helmet was widely distributed in the Imperial German Army on the western front. Used on both fronts of the war, the "Stahlhelm" proved quite successful, one of the few disadvantages being the impairment of the wearers hearing due to the size and shape of the helmet.

M42 Stahlhelm

Due to wartime production difficulties and a lack of raw materials, the Model 1942 Stahlhelm was stamped out of only one sheet of steel. This process eliminated the distinctive rim crimping seen in earlier models of the Stahlhelm. Due to the absence of crimping the Model 1942 had a sharp appearance and the size of the helmets increased slightly. The Model 1942 Stahlhelm remained in production until the end of the war and saw wide use by the Wehrmacht and auxiliary formations.

M36 Fallschrimjaeger Stahlhelm

Click for large image. The Luftwaffe introduced the Fallschrimjaeger (Airborne and Glider borne troops) helmet in 1936. The Model 1936 Fallschrimjaeger helmet did not differ greatly from the Model 1935. With the exception of its lighter weight and lack of helmet crimping, it basically resembled the Model 1935 Stahlhelm without a helmet rim. Additional padding was added to the interior of the helmet to protect the wearer during airborne operations.
