Introduced by AIF Order No.1053 of 4th January 1918, Overseas Service Chevrons were worn point upwards on the right forearm. The chevrons were awarded in two colours, red and blue. The first chevron being red if awarded for service before the 31st December 1914. All other chevrons awarded were blue.
Within the AIF the first chevron was earned on the date the individual left Australia. Additional chevrons were awarded for each successive aggregate period of 12 months service outside Australia.
These badges are made of thread embroidered onto a khaki wool backing. They consist of a single red, and four blue chevrons. Unwanted chevrons can be cut off.
