The carrier entrenching tool was adopted in 1909. Few changes were made to the carrier during its service life. The third pattern introduced in July 1916 is loosely shaped to hold the entrenching tool head it had two buckles for the attachment to the equipment. It is closed with a 1 inch tab and buckle.
