By the outbreak of the Boer War the slouch hat had been adopted by many Australian military units. The majority of contingents sent to the war from Australian states were clothed with this item. The slouch hat proved to be ideal for the harsh climate of the South Africa veldt. Unneccesary embellishments, such as plumes, badges and coloured puggarees tended to be removed as the war progressed to aid camouflage.
A reproduction of the slouch hat worn by New South Wales Mounted Rifles c.1896, these slouch hats are a light khaki fur felt. They have the following accoutrements: a reproduction NSW "Badge of the Colony" hat badge (Queen Victoria's Crown) on red cloth background, chin strap, reproduction four-fold black pugaree, and reproduction black cock's plumes.
