Military Telescopic Sights

British No.32 Telescopic Sights

Unused and forgotten for many years these original British Second World War scopes were recently unearthed in military stores. They are in very good condition considering both their age and method of storage. All will benefit greatly from expert cleaning.

There was a desperate shortage of sniper's rifles at the outbreak of the Second World War. Development of a No.4 sniper's rifle was undertaken in 1940 with trials rifles, before production of the No.4 rifle had begun. The rifle was fitted with the No.32 scope, originally designed for use with the Bren LMG, a removeable mount being used due to the weight of the scope. Officially adopted in 1942, the No.4 sniper's rifle had already been in use for some time.

Canadian (R.E.L.) No.32 Scopes

Production of the No.4 Mk.I (T) was also undertaken by the Canadian small arms factory Longbranch during the Second World War. By December 1945 Longbranch had produced some 1,141 sniper's rifles. This relatively small total was due to the inability of the scope manufacturer Research Enterptises Limited to provide sufficient scopes for greater production. Canadian REL scopes are far rarer than British scopes and as a result are highly sought after by collectors.
