Of unknown provedence, this pistol is undoubtedly one of the many Ruby style pistols produced in Spain following the First World War.
In 1914 the Spanish firm Gabilondo y Urresti began manufacture of a sturdy self-loading pistol based upon the Browning Model 1903 and chambered for the 7.65mm cartridge. In 1915 examples of the pistol were sent to the French government, who were desperately short of small arms, and after testing was adopted as the "Pistolet Automatique de 7 millimètre 65 genre "Ruby". Gabilondo was initially contracted to produce 10,000 pistols a month. By August however, the quanitity had been increased to 30,000 and later 50,000 a month. Unable to cope with such demand other firms wear contracted to produce the Ruby pistol. By the end of the war somewhere near 50 companies had been contracted to produce Ruby pistols, or Ruby style pistols in a range of calibres, barrel lengths and magazine capacities.
While Gabilondo ceased production of the Ruby in 1919, many other firms continued manufacture until well into the 1920s.
This pistol appears to have been remarked 'Royal' as this is roughly pencilled into the frame and carved into the grips. The pistol itself is in good condition with the majority of its blue remaining and the grips in relatively good condition. The barrel shows significant use and the rifling is worn and pitted.
