American Optical Sunglasses
Since 1833 American Optical has been manufacturing fine optical equipment. In 1917, AO designed and built eight mobile optical units to support U.S. and Allied Forces in Europe during WWI. Since then AO has maintained a close relationship with the US military. Between 1943 and 1944, a total of 10 million goggles frames, 5 million pairs of sunglasses and over 6.5 million pairs of lenses were grounded and polished, including 1.4 million prescriptions delivered to the Armed Forces. In 1946 the company and its work force were presented the Army-Navy "E" award in recognition of their dedication to the cause of national defense.
Original Pilot's Sunglasses
In 1958 American Optical designed and manufactured the Flight Goggle 58 for the US military to provide pilots with maximum protection, optical performance and comfort. Now known as Original Pilot's Sunglasses these sunglasses have been in continuous production since then. AO Original Pilot's Sunglasses were the first sunglasses to land on the moon in 1969 and have been used by millions of US soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen.
