The standard 2nd Pattern FS handle had a checkered pattern created by a wheel with raised lines which was rolled over the handle. On the 'Reverse Knurled' knife a recessed diamond pattern was similarly created by a wheel with raised diamonds, rather than lines.
This variant is extremely rare and appears to have been primarily, possibly only, made by Sheffield maker J.Clarke & Sons. Of all the knives encountered in the shipment we received, the reverse knurled knives were the only type to be marked with a maker's name and year of manufacture.
This knife has substantial damage to the blade. The tip is broken and there are areas of heavy pitting. The handle is in very good condition, and the majority of the original black finish remains. An examiners mark (↑4) is marked on the handle near the guard. The maker's name (J.Clarke & Sons) and year of manufacture (1942) are marked on the guard.
