The Pattern 1868 Lance replaced the earlier Pattern 1860 and was superceded by the Pattern 1885. It is the only British pattern of lance not to be declared obsolete or omitted and is the only lance still used by the MOD.
This lance has a male bamboo stave with 12 5/8 inch head and 6 13/16 inch butt. A flag is attached by three leather thongs just under the head. The strap is held to the stave by leather thongs and a leather protector is sewn around the stave below this.
