Two patterns of mess tin were issued to Australian troops during the First World War. Both patterns were constructed in tin plate, the majority being steel with a protective tin plate. The round mess tin was issued to mounted troops. The tins were usually worn in a cotton canvas cover which was attached to the saddle by a leather strap.
