This badge was awarded to those men classified as first class Lewis gunners after the examination following the Lewis gun course. This class was higher than that required to pass this examination. The badge was awarded to all members of the machine gun team. It was worn on the left forearm.
Period photographs also show this badge being worn above chevrons on the right arm. This appears to indicate the wearer was an instructor.
