The M6 Bayonet was adopted in 1957, the same year as the M14 rifle, with which it was intended to be used. Like its predecessor, the M5 bayonet (M1 Garand), the M6 was intended to used also as both a combat and utility knife. The blade, like the M4, M5, and later M7 bayonets, was based on the Second World War M3 Trench Knife. The M6 was made by various contractors, including the Aerial Cutlery Co., Columbus Milpar and Mfg. Co. and Imperial Knife Co, between 1961 and 1969.
