Details

Alpha Industries MA-1 Flight Jacket has a water resistant, mid-weight flight nylon outer shell with knit cuffs, collar and waistband. The durable front zipper includes a storm flap for warmth. There are multiple snap-closure pockets as well as a utility/pencil pocket from which the 'Remove Before Flight' keychain is hung. Alpha Industries' MA-1 flight jackets, like the military originals, are reversible to bright orange, making them ideal for those times when visibility is imperative. These jackets have been kept as close as possible to the classic military specifications, dating from the early 1950s and revised during the 1960s.>

The MA-1 was adopted by US Air Force and Navy pilots and ground crew in the mid-1950s. Designed for use in temperatures between -10 and 10 degrees C, the MA-1 originally had a wool knit collar, waistband and cuffs. The MA-1 discarded the mouton fur collar of its predecessor, the B-15, because it interfered with the parachute harness worn by pilots. The jacket included tabs to which the oxygen mask could be clipped, and  to hold headset wires. In 1960 an indian orange lining was added to the jacket. In the event of a crash, a pilot could then reverse the jacket making them more visible to rescue personnel. As equipment changed, and the jackets were adopted by other branches of the armed forces, many of these features were removed from the jacket.

Alpha Industries' first government contract for the MA-1 was awarded in 1963. Alpha Industries first started producing the MA-1 flight jacket for the civilian market in the 1970s. While the jacket has evolved over the years it remains one of Alpha Industries most popular designs.
