The WE37 braces used 'reduction weaving' to give a lighter brace, leaving a flared shoulder section. The design was used in the WE Pattern 1913. The braces were made in left and right patterns, the left brace having a loop through which the right passed at the rear. During the Second World War manufacturers, unable to reproduce Mills' reduction weaving, produced the braces in parts, the one inch straps being attached to the shoulder piece. A number of different methods were used to attach these pieces the most common simply stitching the parts together, the edges of the shoulder piece being turned under to form tapered ends.

Later, as a means of simplifying, and therefore increasing, production the loop on the left brace was removed.
