Details

The budenovka is a distinctive soft, woollen hat with a peak and distinctive pointed cover. The hat has folded earflaps that can be buttoned beneath the chin thereby covering the ears and neck, or can be worn folded around the crown.

The Budenovka was designed by the famous Russian painter, Viktor Vasnetsov. The design was intended to inspire Russian troops by connecting them with the legendary figures of Russian folklore. Made during the First World War, they were not issued, however were subsequently adopted by Communist troops of the Red Army as they were both abundant and distinctive. Commonly decorated with a red star pin, later a larger wool star was sewn to the hat as well, although most commonly red this star was blue for cavalry and black for artillery.

The Budenovka did not survive the army reforms of the 1930s. Although it was relatively easy to produce it was both expensive and impractical.

These Budenovka are made in Russia to the same design as those used by the Red Army during the Russian Revolution.
