Produced by the firm of Rodgers in the Autumn of 1942, the 'Ribbed and Beaded' 2nd Pattern knife is considered by some to be the finest of all wartime Fairbairn-Sykes knives. The handles of these knives were cast in pure brass and had a distinctive design of plain rings alternating with beaded rings.

This original 'Ribbed and Beaded' 2nd Pattern knife is in good condition, although, unfortunately, the blade has been damaged. While the blade does retain much of its blue, the tip is broken and there are areas of heavy pitting. The handle is in excellent condition although most of the black painted finish is gone. An examiners mark, consisting of a broad arrow with the numeral 7, is stamped on the handle near the guard.

The Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife was designed by Captains W.E. Fairbairn and E.A. Sykes at the Commando Special Training Centre, located in the Scottish Highlands at Achnacarry. Both former members of the Shanghai Police Force, Fairbairn and Sykes had returned to England at the beginning of the Second World War, where they were commissioned as Captains to instruct British Commandos in knife fighting, unarmed combat, and self defence. The knife was adopted by the British Army and soon proved extremely popular with British special forces.

Introduced in 1941, what is today known as the 2nd Pattern, but was at the time called the 'New Pattern', was a simplified version of the original Fairbairn-Sykes design. The handguard was of a simple straight design, instead of the 'S' shaped guard of the original. And, while the blade was still drop-forged and hand ground, it did not have the large ricasso of the original.
