British Pattern 1845 Infantry Officer's Sword

Availability: Out of stock

$975.00

Quick Overview

The Pattern 1845 officer's sword retained the hilt of the earlier Pattern 1822, replacing the pipe-backed blade used on this pattern, with a blade with long, broad fullers and a large square ricasso (sometimes called the 'Wilkinson" blade).

Details

The Officer's Dress Regulations of 1822 introduced a new pattern of sword, to replace the Pattern 1803 Officer’s sabre and spadroons previously in use. Described as being “Gothic Hilt” due to the similarity between the decorative curved bars of the guard and the arches found in Gothic architecture, the sword featured a 32.5 inch (825 mm) slightly curved blade of what was known as the “pipe-back” or “quill-back” design. The guard also featured a hinged portion, allowing the sword to be hung close to the body. While aesthetically pleasing, the swords were not well-liked. Despite this, the pattern, and its many variants, remained in service throughout most of the 19th century, before being replaced near the end of the Victorian era in 1897.

This original Pattern 1845 sword is in very good condition. The guard has been repaired at some time and the blade nickel plated. Despite this the acid etched foliage design and 'VR' cypher remain clear on the blade. The scabbard is leather with brass fittings. The leather is now soft and has cracked.
