Details

This mid-18th Century Scottish basket hilt back sword is from a group of which about a dozen examples are known. Within these examples there are wide variations in the hilt, including examples with and without a forward quillion and the oval rein aperture. An example with that last feature, formerly in Eglinton Castle, sponsor and host of the Eglinton Tournament, is now in the Royal Ontario Museum. Most are mounted with earlier, presumably family blades. This sword has been traditionally identified by the portrait of an 18th century Scottish Officer entitled The Pinch of Snuff and attributed to William Delacour. It features a ray skin, wire-wrapped grip, intricate basket hilt and a double fullered blade. A black scabbard with matching throat & belt stop and tip is included.
