Details

Introduced in 1895, the Martini-Enfield Mk.I was a conversion of the Martini-Henry Mk.III rifle. A 30.2" .303 barrel, with .005" Enfield rifling, was fitted. The top of the receiver filed down for the lower line of sight. The sight bed was marked from 200 to 500 yards, and the leaf graduated from 600 to 1800 yards. The Martini-Henry fore-end had a liner glued in for the smaller diameter barrel, and was reduced in length. A marking disc and sling swivel was added to the butt, as were modified bands, the middle band having the front swivel and the upper band a piling swivel. A wooden handguard was fitted, retained by a spring around the barrel. The original Martini-Henry rifle markings remained on the right side of the receiver, the conversion markings being marked of the left side of the receiver.

Markings on the butt, including the roundel, Victorian government ownership, and sold out of service marks, are clear. A nickel plated brass plaque has been attached to the butt, with the inscription: 'H.H.CUMMINS/S.M.R.C./19.11.00'. H.H. Cummins was a member and Captain of the South Melbourne Rifle Club until 1903, when he moved to Tasmania.
