French c 1850 Officers Pistols (Pair)

Availability: In stock

AUD$7,500.00

This pair of pistols were made in France and proofed at St. Etienne post 1824 and pre 1856. The makers name is difficult to trace.

Due to the design of the lock, it appears that the lock plates were originally designed for a flint lock pistol, which would put these pistols manufacture, just at the change over to percussion, around 1840 - 50.

The calibre is around .60". The Ram rods looks to be ivory tipped with a cleaning jag on the opposite end.

The barrels are a fine damascus twist with a hooked breech and a spherical chamber. The barrels are held by 2 wedges. The rifling appears to be very early "micro groove", which in this era would have fowled very quickly.

The locks are bright polish, internally and externally, though the internal screws are heat blued. The hammers are dog head decorated and very finely finished

Both pistols are in excellent condition with only minor marks and staining. I can find no rust pitting, and appear to have had very little use.

Details

It has always been common for Officers of many armies to purchase their own side arms. Before the advent of metalic cartridges, officers would purchase a pair of pistols to be kept in the holsters slung over the front of the horses saddle.

The ornateness and finish of these pistols would depend on the depth of the pockets of the purchaser
