The embroidered crown was worn by all Warrant Officers until 1917, when it was replaced by a number of brass badges. It was also worn above chevrons by Brigade or Regimental Sergeants-Major (when not a Warrant Officer); Staff Sergeants-Major; Squadron, Troop, Battery or Company Sergeants-Major; and Colour Sergeants. The embroidered crown was worn by all Warrant Officers until 1917, when it was replaced by a number of brass badges. It was also worn above chevrons by Brigade or Regimental Sergeants-Major (when not a Warrant Officer); Staff Sergeants-Major; Squadron, Troop, Battery or Company Sergeants-Major; and Colour Sergeants. In the Australian Imperial Force, badges of rank, during both the First and Second World Wars, were worn on the right arm only.

These badges are made of wool thread embroidered onto a khaki wool backing. Rank badges are sold individually, not in pairs.
