Details

The keffiyeh or kufiya, meaning "from the city of Kufa", also known as a ghutrah, shemagh, hattah, mashadah, chafiye or cemedani, is a traditional Middle Eastern headdress fashioned from a square scarf, usually made of cotton. It is typically worn by Arabs, as well as by some Jews and Kurds.

Commonly found in arid regions, it provides protection from the sun, dust and sand. Its distinctive woven checkered pattern may have originated in an ancient Mesopotamian representation of either fishing nets or ears of grain, although the true origin remains unknown.

Keffiyeh have been issued to British soldiers, where they are referred to almost exclusively as shemaghs, from prior to the Second World War. Their use continued after the war being worn in both desert and temperate environments in theatres such as Dhofar. Australian Army forces have also used the shemagh since the Vietnam War, and extensively during Iraq and Afghanistan, particularly by Australian Special Forces units.
