Details
Made by Chapman in September 1917, this bayonet appears to have seen long service with the Australian Army. The bayonet shows signs of having been factory repaired at one time, although there are no markings indicating when this occured. The blade has almost all of its original blued finish with minor wear, particularly at the point. The majority of the blueing remains on the pommel and guard. The grips are in good condition. The pommel is marked with an early Australian Defence Department mark of an arrow within a D. The guard is also marked to the 2nd Military District.
The scabbard, with leather made by the Mangrovite Belting Company and dated 1945, is in excellent condition, retaining the majority of its parkerising. There are some small marks on the leather, although this retains the majority of its original brown finish.
